Road Trip: Field Station: Dinosaurs

Giveaway: Family Four Pack of Admission Tickets

By Stacey Jones April 22, 2013
Field Station: Dinosaurs in Secaucus is back for a fabulous second season this year.   We were invited this past weekend to experience their 20-acre outdoor Jurassic learning expedition featuring 32 life-sized animatronic dinosaurs in their ‘natural habitat’ in NJ’s Meadowlands.  Yes, for those of you who remember our visit there last year, there is a new dinosaur on the premises, plus they've quadrupled the programming available to entertain and educate during your visit!

Upon arrival on the grounds, we were issued a Trail Map and accompanying entertainment guide along with our special Passport.  There are some fun and educational games inside the tents alongside the trails, including but not limited to Raptor Feud and Mesozoic Concentration.  These tent sites are both perfect for older kids to gain additional knowledge and fun for kids of all ages to have the excitement of participation in the shows.  The staff interaction level is wonderful at all locations on the grounds.  You can even have a T-Rexcellent time with the 15-foot interactive T-Rex! At each event within the park, upon its conclusion or completion, you will be issued a stamp to your Passport.  Work on filling your Passport up to become a "Super Paleontologist" at the conclusion of your visit.

The new dinosaur, pictured above, has captivated my children's interests, as they've selected it as their new favorite in the park because of how it moved its wings periodically and then would "pose" for them when it was holding still.  Our entire family loved the newly added twenty-three minute 3D movie called Dinosuars Alive!  The movie really mixed it up with a variety of fossilized remains, animated dinosaur interactions, and details on a couple of archeological digs kept everyone intrigued.  The plight of the dinosaurs and the challenges they faced definitely triggered my older daughter's empathy.  Even my younger one loved the movie, too.

Surrounding the dinosaurs on the trails are tents, trucks with cages of smaller dinosaurs, and much more that truly gives you the feeling of being near some paleontologists.   The kids again loved the Fossil Dig Site area, just as they did last year, and the ability to uncover "fossils" on their own.   If you have children who are reading, and for those like me who love to read signs to their kids and add as much educational value to their outings, I definitely recommend taking the time to read the informational signs near the dinosaurs.  My oldest daughter was still talking on the way home about how she couldn't believe the tiny size of the Ankylosaurus brain!

Field Station: Dinosaurs offers discounted admission, saving you $5 per adult and $2.50 per child, when you pre-purchase an Explorer’s Pass including entry to the park and the Dinosaurs Alive! 3D movie in advance online at this link or by calling 855-999-9010.  To take advantage of the sale, tickets must be bought at least one day in advance - Online/phone advanced sale ticket prices: $23/adult, $20.50/child (12 & under) or seniors.  Box office prices on site are $28/adult and $23/child (12 & under) and seniors.  Children two years old and under are free.
