Macaroni Kid May Musings


It's simply hard to fathom that we're practically halfway through May already.  What is it about this time of year that makes things busier before the school year comes to its conclusion?  I haven't quite gotten to that answer yet, but I do try to step back and enjoy every moment for what it is with the family despite the busy schedule.

For those who have children that have never taken swim lessons before, take advantage of this fabulous deal from The Community YMCA. Learn to Swim week has time slots available for kids of all ages from 6 months through Teens and even Adults 18+ to learn water safety basics and have basic swim lessons for five days in a row this June. Come enjoy a boat tour on the beautiful Manasquan Reservoir.  Tours are narrated by Park System Naturalists and will include opportunities to view local wildlife including turtles, egrets, herons, ospreys, and perhaps a Bald Eagle.  Tours are 45 minutes long.  Please arrive 10 minutes prior to departure time.

Sunday, May 19 - “Rock and Walk” Fundraiser Supports NJ Families That Have Lost Infants & Pregnancies

The NJ Chapter of the national TEARS Foundation's 4th Annual “Rock and Walk” event is May 19th in Bradley Beach from 10am-2pm. The TEARS Foundation is the only resource of its kind that helps families pay for a baby’s funeral. “We want to give families dignity and choices as they make funeral preparations for their little one,” adds Rivka Milchman, event co-chair. The NJ event promises to be a fun-filled day with music, entertainment for the kids, great food, an uplifting butterfly release, special prizes & giveaways. Families across that state that have lost a child are invited.

Two River Theater Company is accepting applications through Monday, May 20th for its Metro Scholars program, a year-long opportunity for high school students from across the state of New Jersey to be part of the work of Two River Theater. The program, which is free for participating students, is open to current high school sophomores who will be juniors during the 2013-14 school year. The deadline for applications is Monday, May 20 at 6 pm.

Homemade Musical Instruments


Make your own rain stick and tambourine!

Materials for Both Instruments:
  • Toilet paper roll for rain stick
  • 2 paper plates for tambourine
  • Construction paper
  • Tape (wide, packaging tape is easiest)
  • Beans or rice
  • Yarn, string, or ribbon
  • Decorative materials (foam shapes, scrap paper, markers, etc.)
Rain Stick Instructions:
  1. Fill the paper towel roll or toilet paper roll with some rice.
  2. Wrap 1 piece of construction paper around toilet paper roll, making sure both ends are well covered.
  3. Place tape over any seams.
  4. Decorate!
Tambourine Instructions:
  1. Put rice on one plate.
  2. Place the second plate over the first ...
