History Kids Club is an interactive program that invites children and young adults, ages 5 to 12, into the Historic Village at Allaire to experience history first hand. Club members learn all about what it meant to live and work in an industrial village like the Howell Iron works in the 1830s by participating in hands-on activities that range from basket weaving and butter making to historical nature walks. Parents and children alike are encouraged to join us as we explore the past in this fun and educational museum series! History Kids Club meets once a month on the Village grounds. October Theme-Are you dressier than a store clerk or an ore-raiser? In the 1830s, folks were remarkably fashion forward at the Howell Iron Works! With huge bolts of brightly patterned fabric for sale at the Village’s General Store and fashion magazines like Goodey’s Lady's Book circulating from house to house, most people wore clothes that were custom made – or, at least, custom-tailored – for their own needs and bodies. That doesn’t mean everyone wasted old clothes or fabrics, however! In the 1830s prepared using the materials around them! Join us this October as we learn all about the natural pigments people used to create, alter, and repurpose the fabrics in their lives. After joining together in front of the Visitor Center, we’ll take a journey to the heart of the Village and learn all about the ways people dress! Then, we’ll gather walnuts from the Village green and begin to make our own dye! Don’t forget to bring a light shirt, bandana, or other fabric item that you’d like to dye in preparation for the oncoming spooky season! Parents will have their own fun as they join their child in the day’s activities. We offer two sessions each moth: once from 10:30AM to 12:30PM and again from 1:30PM to 3:30PM. Please be sure to purchase your ticket(s) for the correct time slot. Tickets cost $10 per child and are non-refundable. Space is limited so register early! Is your schedule too full to join us for this session of History Kids Club? Are you looking for a gift for the young historians in your life? Buy a History Kids Club Kit!
