Macaroni Review: The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical

An Alluring and Entertaining Escapade to Camp Half Blood and Beyond

By Stacey Jones October 19, 2019

Are you a mortal or are you a demi-god? Have you been to Camp Half Blood? Fans of the Percy Jackson book series will go crazy for the new Broadway musical. The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical, the original musical adaption of Rick Riordan’s New York Times best-selling novel, is on Broadway for a strictly limited 16-week holiday engagement following the recent conclusion of its 32-city North American First National Tour. Performances began Friday, September 20 ahead of a Wednesday, October 16 opening night at the Longacre Theatre, 220 W. 48th Street, New York. We had the pleasure of being invited to see The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical on Broadway. Both of my girls have read all of the books from which this musical is adapted and we were excited for the opportunity to see it brought to life on stage.

As a son of Poseidon, Percy Jackson has newly discovered powers he can’t control, monsters on his trail, and is on a quest to find Zeus’ lightning bolt to prevent a war between the Greek gods. The splendid Broadway cast brings the story to life on stage with a thrilling, original rock score that captivates the audience. The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical is an alluring and entertaining escapade to Camp Half Blood and beyond. Having been avid readers of the original book series on which this Broadway musical is based, my kids felt the plot told the story in a different way, staying true to the original but adding its own clever elements and twists that kept you on the edge of your seats. For those lucky enough to witness the story unfold on stage, there were moments of fear, excitement, anticipation, and even many occasions of laughter during the production. Unexpected moments of interaction with the audience added a unique element of surprise to the show.

Chris McCarrell's depiction of Percy Jackson was immensely captivating as throughout his entertaining performance, he offered an exceptional portrayal of his character. Kristin Stokes in the role of Annabeth was a magnificent standout in this production with her remarkable vocals and theatrics throughout the show. Jorrel Javier has an incredible energy on stage that exudes confidence in all of his roles. The full original company of the tour brings The Lightning Thief to life on the Broadway stage including: Chris McCarrell (Les Miserables) as Percy Jackson, with Izzy Figueroa, Jorrel Javier, Ryan Knowles, Sam Leicht, Sarah Beth Pfeifer, James Hayden Rodriguez, Jalynn Steele, T. Shyvonne Stewart, and Kristin Stokes.

Our entire family thoroughly enjoyed The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical. We highly recommend it for an entertaining day or night out with your family. Catch it on Broadway until January 5th, but don't wait - grab those tickets and see it while it's still showing in New York City.
