By Stacey Jones April 7, 2019

At Monmouth Boat Club in Red Bank, we have a long history of teaching children to enjoy the lifelong sport of sailing. Whether your child is a beginner interested in learning the foundations of sailing or is a more experienced sailor interested in honing their abilities, our skilled staff will work together with them to achieve their goals. Our program has been in existence for over 50 years, and we have seen some of our students achieve greatness on and off the water!

Our Junior Sailing program for 2019 provides flexibility for parents and students, allows for varying skill levels, and creates enthusiasm and engagement in the sport of sailing. Our primary goal is to ensure that your children have an enjoyable and safe time here at Monmouth Boat Club. All of our instructors are US Sailing Level 1 certified, CPR and First Aid certified.

Description of the 2019 Programs:

Intro to Sailing Camp: We are excited to offer a one week camp at the beginning of the summer that provides first time sailors a chance to get their feet wet in a fun and relaxed atmosphere!  Students will learn the basics of knot tying, parts of the boat, water safety, and rigging.  In addition to the basics, they will experience the thrill of actual sailing an Opti!  Students may choose this camp alone or continue on with our Beginner program.

Beginner: This is a beginner course offered as a follow up to the Intro to Sailing camp or for students with less than one year of instruction.  We offer two options; a three-week or six-week course where students will further develop their sailing knowledge and skills in an exciting but safe environment.  Students will learn through classroom and on-the-water activities in the Opti fleet of boats.  They will learn water safety, boat controls, basic sailing maneuvers, basic seamanship, wind direction and sailing a course.

Intermediate: Completed one year of sailing instruction, then this course is for you! This class allows students to strengthen their sailing knowledge and skills.  Emphasis is placed on proper boat-handling skills, including sail trim, body positioning, weight placement, tiller use, tacking and jibing, and capsize recovery. Sailors will also learn and develop their racing skills and will have the opportunity to participate in local regattas.  Students will sail either Opti’s or Blue Jay’s depending on their skill level.

Intro 420/Blue Jay’s: This class is for older beginners who are new to sailing and sailors new to the 420. Sailors must be at least 12 years old and/or weigh more than 100 lbs. The 420 provides older students the chance to learn in a double-handed boat. It will also teach previous Optimist sailors skills to sail in a double-handed boat. Students will learn how to both crew and skipper. The focus of this class will be learning to sail as a team.  As skills improve they will work towards learning to fly a spinnaker and use the trapeze (if in a 420).

Advanced/Racing 420 & Laser: This is for more advanced students, and you know how you are!  Students with at least two years of Beginner 420/Blue Jay’s will refine their sailing and boat handling skills, learn the rules of sailboat racing and be introduced to both spinnaker and trapeze work for the 420’s. Advanced students will continue building on the importance of learning to work as a team.
